Here, we do some pretty cool dashboarding in our CRM implementation. Unfortunately, Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 only supports 5 standard (read: boring) chart types out of the box: Column, Bar, Line, Pie, and Funnel. Well, I take that back--Funnel is exciting, but the other 4 are definitely boring.

CRM 2011 Out-of-the-box Chart Types

However, since CRM uses the standard .NET Framework Chart control, it is an undocumented feature that you can extend the charting visualizations to take advantage of many other chart types. And, even better, this can be done without development extension of the control! Read more...

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 is a great leap forward for the Dynamics family of products. Microsoft really focused on an improved user experience. Things are easier to do in less clicks, and the whole look and feel of CRM is improved, in my opinion. CRM 4.0 had a lot of lacking features, and it appears that Microsoft kept up reading the forums of people's wants and needs, and brought almost all of those to life in CRM 2011.

You Can't Win by Following.

When we hear the word innovation, people consistently think of companies like Apple or Google. We (generally) think of companies that are growing significantly, often in technology, and whose name or brand is easily recognizable.  When we are also looking for growth or success, we often find ourselves asking questions like, “how does Amazon do this?” or “how does Facebook do that?” But if you’re truly trying to achieve great success -even if on a much smaller scale than these companies- the key is not to do what they do.

In the modern era, it would be difficult to find anyone in an industrialized nation who did not have access to a personal computing platform such as a desktop, laptop, PDA, or cellular phone. The proliferation of these devices throughout the market means that today more than ever we are interconnected peoples whose lives span across not only the physical world but also the virtual. For many members of the younger generations, this overlap is seamless and transparent. Differentiating between the virtual and physical portions of their lives is essentially meaningless.

Last night we had a great opportunity to demo Tenpointsix to a group of HVAC conference attendees at Victory Field, home of our minor league baseball team.  As we walked around to demo the app on iPads and iPhones, we had the chance to really see how potential users saw the app fitting into their businesses.

How many times has this happened to you?  You arrive at a client site to service a piece of equipment, and no one available knows where said equipment is.  Wasted time and a frustrated customer is no way to start a service call.

iPads seem to be emerging in new industries every day.  Finding the right apps to combine with the iPad's growing popularity could give your business a competitive edge.

With the rise of ubiquitous computing there has been increasing market penetration of devices allowing access to the constant streams of “always-on” communication that modern consumers expect; simultaneously transformative technologies such as web-services have been developed to better integrate these data pools across a wide variety of platforms. Increasingly, business users expect to operate on the same pool of shared corporate and personal data on a wide variety of computing devices within the span of a single day, or even a single meeting. Whether they are aware of it or not, businesses have created an implicit cloud architecture that is essentially transparent to both their professional and consumer users. Throughout the course of each day, both internal and external users to a system participate in “natural” clouds. Natural clouds are comprised of networked individuals who share information freely with one another, and in doing so disseminate information across an organization in accordance with security...

The ever demanding marketplace is evolving in every aspect, including the field service industry.  Can your firm keep up?

During my 10 years of consulting I have worked with many engineers who are great leaders and manage successful technology companies. There are many characteristics that define a leader. Like asking the right questions, admitting when something isn’t working quite right and working hard to make improvements when necessary. But – there’s a balance that needs to be found between sales and innovation. As a consultant – this is the nitty-gritty part that leads us to this question: What comes first, the chicken or the egg? What comes selling of the product or “perfecting” it?

In the service industry, timing is everything. Whether deploying resources or awaiting their arrival, it always pays to have a handle on every event experienced by your organization. And when it comes to scheduling, the centuries-old tool of choice for time management is the venerable calendar. Although we might not often think of it as such, we can readily consider it the timeless equivalent of the modern dashboard (another excellent feature available through Microsoft CRM 2011).

Long gone are the hard, walled divisions of sales, marketing and field functions of large enterprise businesses.  Companies in industries as diverse as sound dampening vibration systems, to HVAC, to the Aircraft Manufacturing are realizing one simple concept.

Prior to attending the Measurement Science Conference in Pasadena this past March, I had a preconception that most field work was documented with paper and pencil or on a laptop that was carried from place to place. Coming from a younger generation that grew up with computers and smart phones, I could hardly believe it when I found out it was true; most service industries still use outdated methods of recording data. I was astonished at the interest and positive reactions we were getting from the conference attendees and exhibitors.  I knew our product, Tenpointsix, had the potential to be a large success and was excited to hear others say the same.

The impact that Tenpointsix could make on all aspects of any service business is huge, but forget the CRM integration, the consolidation of business functions, and all the other envied features of Tenpointsix for a second. The difference that this product can make solely to the field techs who will no longer have to spend a day at the office reentering data,...

Tenpointsix was first launched at the Measurement Science Conference in Pasadena, California this past March.  We had a great time networking, talking with, and getting to know all those we spoke with.  Although Calibration is just one industry that TenPointSix can be used for, this is truly where it all started.  Read what one of our team members thoughts were about the launch...
